Caterpillar 3160 Diesel Engine

Caterpillar had came out with the 1100 medium truck engine in the 1960’s which became the 3160 marine engine. It was a larger V8 engine at 636 cubic inches of displacement, but like it’s other V8 rivals, it suffered from weak “bottom end” problems also. In marine use, it also suffered from a design flaw of the camshaft driven gear that sometimes resulted in the gear spinning on the camshaft during a prop-strike. When Caterpillar came out with the 3160’s successor, the 3208, they improved the strength of the “bottom end”, but like the 3160 it still had the camshaft gear flaw.

Jack: In the late 60’s and early 70’s the Cat 3160 was installed in many boats. Some history of the Cat 3160 Marine engine, now long out of production. The Cat 3160 (636 CU IN) is the marine conversion by Cat for the old Cat 1100 series Truck engine (vintage 1960’s). Ford installed the engines in Ford LN 700, 800 and 900 trucks at Ford’s Louisville, Ky plant among others and called them Ford V-8 636 Cu In. The Cat 1100 had no cylinder liners and only two piston rings, which gave good fuel efficiency at idle and low RPM in truck city-delivery service. The engines were a success for short haul service but had a fault that crankshaft and/or connecting rod bearings had a tendency to fail. Cat redesigned the engine by changing the fuel injection system, beefing up the crankshaft bearings and redesigned the cooling system keeping the same block (could be bored to .040 in oversize), intake manifold and footprint and designating the engine a Cat 3208 (2 piston rings). The Cat 3208 engine externally looks like the Cat 1100 except that the 1100 has a straight 8-position fuel injection pump and the 3208 has a V-8 shaped injection pump. Also the water-cooling system is different. Horsepower range of the two normally aspirated engines are alike (190-225 HP probably). Marine conversion hang-on parts are the same except for some of the fresh water-cooling parts. As you probably know, the 3208 has gone out of production recently. The original caterpillar 3208 diesel engine was a 225hp?, 636 cubic-inch capacity V8 design. It did not have cylinder liners, but many engineering companies would re-bore the blocks and fit oversize pistons and rings rather than throw the engines away. (They were known as “throw away engines,” which the makers claim was one of the design criteria.)
The 3208 emerged in 1973 as a turbocharged version but in 1981, major design mods such as stronger internal rotating parts, three-ring pistons, and beefed up oil and water pumps. The cooling system was also upgraded to include a bigger heat exchanger and seawater pump to cool the engine oil, exhaust manifolds, and turbochargers with the expansion tank and thermostats also being modified.
It was used in many applications but soon became a firm favorite with the yachts and pleasure boats fraternity, with the larger vessels having twin turbo-charged engines fitted.
Unfortunately, the engine was a bit of a gas guzzler and failed to meet the new internal combustion exhaust emission laws which were due to come into force in the new millennium; therefore it was discontinued in 1999.

Originally produced in 1975 through a collaboration between Caterpillar and Ford, the Cat 3208 diesel engine was extremely popular through its entire production run, which lasted into the early 1990s. The engine was used in heavy trucks, including tractor trailers, garbage trucks, school buses and construction equipment. The engine was also used in power plant and marine applications. Use of the engine was widespread and its performance was reliable; as a result, many 3208-equipped vehicles remain in service long after production of the engine ceased.
Configuration
The 3208 is an eight-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine with a V-8 configuration. It has a 114.3-millimeter bore and a 127-millimeter stroke. Different variations of the engine weigh between 722 and 899 kilograms. The engine displaces 10.4 liters. It has a cooling system capacity of between 47.3 and 56 liters and a lube oil system capacity of between 12 and 15 liters.
Power
Three versions of the 3208 engine have varying power ratings. The version with the lowest power produces 210 horsepower, the mid-range version produces 375 horsepower and the most powerful version produces 435 horsepower.
Compression Ratio
The compression ratio for the 210- and 375-horsepower versions of the 3208 is 16.5:1. The compression ratio of the 435-horsepower version is 15.5:1.
Other Details
The 3208 has a forged steel crankshaft, and early versions had a cast iron camshaft, which was replaced with a steel camshaft in later versions. Both turbocharged and non-turbo versions of the engine were produced.

Caterpillar 3208 – The Throwaway Engine to Keep

Although its original concept was a cheap throw-away engine, the Caterpillar 3208 engine has been used for many applications. Perhaps the most popular application has been to power marine craft, where it has proved to be a reliable engine, with some boats clocking up thousands of running hours.
Introduction to Caterpillar Tractors and 3208 Diesel Engines
The Caterpillar Company was formed in 1911, after some years of research and development. It reputedly took its name from a farmer who was watching a test run and stated that it moved “like a caterpillar.”
Caterpillar engines have proved to be reliable and cheap, and the 3208 is particular suited to fitting into all sizes of boats. An RNLI Lifeboat near Drogheda in Ireland is powered by twin 3208 turbo-charged diesels – such is their reliability.
This is an article on diesel engines and in particular the Caterpillar 3208 diesel engine and its application in modern times. We begin with a short history of the Caterpillar Company and move on to its assets.
Short History of the Caterpillar Company
As we saw in the introduction, the Holt Caterpillar Company was founded in 1911. It produced tractors and exported them to Canada, Argentina, and Mexico, gaining much experience which it used during the First World War.
During the war Caterpillar Armored Tractors were used extensively to tow artillery pieces such as howitzers. It wasn’t long before the British Army Engineers saw the potential of using the track driven tractor as an armored tank.
After the war, the depression set in and Holt Caterpillar was forced to sell out to a competitor named Best who scrapped the production of large tractors in favor of smaller agricultural ones. He formed the Caterpillar Company in 1925. All the livery including the engines was painted yellow, distinguishing it from its competitor’s machines.
During this time the engines were developing apace, and during the Second World War found fame once again when their diesel engines became the preferred engine as opposed to a gas (petrol) one.
Since then Caterpillar engines have become world famous. I worked on a couple of 3208 marine diesels over the years, and although they were very basic, I liked them.
They were reliable being easy to strip and repair as there was always plenty of spares around, no matter what part of the world I was working in.

weak “bottom end”
Design Flaw: Camshaft Gear interference fit. In marine use, it suffered from a design flaw of the camshaft driven gear that sometimes resulted in the gear spinning on the camshaft during a prop-strike.  The gear and camshaft can be drilled and tapped for bolts to secure the gear to the camshaft.

Detroit Diesel saw the need for a cheap, fuel efficient engine to power medium trucks and school busses. Their answer was a lightweight, slightly under-square (108mm bore x 112mm stroke) 500 cubic inch displacement, four-stroke-cycle V8 diesel engine called the 8.2 Litre. The engine was eventually marinized by a few third-party companies (¿including Johnson & Towers?) and fitted to vessels, but they proved to be quite troublesome as they were prone to head gasket problems due to the lack of a proper ‘deck’ for the the head, and bearing failures due to a weak “bottom end”.
Cummins developed the 555 cubic inch displacement V-555 (Triple Nickel) engine to fill the same market, but it proved to have a weak “bottom end” as well.

I'm surprised that so much if this site is free. But I still signed up so I could access the thousands of expanded pages, interesting articles, and dozens of valuable programs! The member's library of books, magazines and videos that I can view online is really terrific! I understand that you and your staff are all unpaid volunteers. Please keep up the good work. And I commend you for your plans to add another 10,000 free informative articles over the next year. I'm thrilled to support you in this endeavor with my small membership donation. They say that it will take about 100,000 articles to cover the full scope that they have envisioned for the website. They have over 20,000 articles so far and that's doing pretty well, but it could take several years to get the rest. I also noticed that many of the Main Topic Pages and some of the article pages are still in the rough draft stage. I guess that they will fill in as they can get volunteers to work on them. But what I can't figure out is why anyone would spend the time writing informative in depth articles just to give away free to this website for publication? What's in it for them?"

FROM Dewey: "Well Huey, to me It looks like most of the articles on this website are written by very informed people, like boating instructors, boat designers, boat builders, riggers, electricians, fitters, marine repair technicians and marine surveyors. Writing such articles helps establish them as knowledgeable professionals. After all, this website was originally created by a school for marine technicians and marine surveyors. The website is growing in content every day. They even had to move to a bigger, more powerful server because the website's traffic has been growing exponentially."

This site is quickly becoming the ultimate reference resource about every aspect of boats and ships for everyone from the beginning recreational boater to the seasoned professional mariner. I use the topic pages on the right sidebar to browse around the website. It's like a Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook for Boaters. Their Members' Library of over 300 popular and obscure books and over 200 magazine back issues that can be viewed online is fabulous. The Academy's magazine is especially informative. On top of that, there is the "Ask-An-Expert program for members where you can get an expert's answer to any of your boat questions. And a whole years membership is only $25. What a deal! I really love being part of this "Everything About Boats" community and help provide thousands of helpful articles free to the public. I think that I'll sit down right now and write an article about my experiences boating with my uncle."

Sure, it has a lot of good information for boaters, and they're adding more every day, but it will probably never be finished. Furthermore, I don't even own a boat.
