WaterWitch

Sears, Roebuck & Company sold boat motors sourced from several engine manufacturers, but badged with their own private brands. The first was “Motorgo” inboards produced by Lockwood-Ash Motor Co. & Outboards produced by Caille Perfection Motor Co. from 1928 to 1932?. Other outboard brands were: “Water Witch” (two words) produced for Sears by either OMC (with earlier Lockwood-Ash Motor Co. engines/designs), Caille Perfection Motor Co., Muncie Gear Co., Kissel Industries, or Johnson Outboard Motors from 1933 to 1945?. See Model Year Guide below to see which models were built by which Manufacturer. “Waterwitch” (one word) produced by Kissel exclusively for Sears from 1936? to 1945. “Elgin” produced by Kissel’s successor West Bend for Sears from 1946 to 1965 & West Bend’s successor Chrysler from 1965 to 1972 when Sears switched to Scott-McCulloch engines. “Sears” Ξ19??Ξ to Ξ19??Ξ. “Ted Williams” Ξ19??Ξ to Ξ19??Ξ. “Barricuda” (by Eska) Ξ1961?Ξ to Ξ1962?Ξ. “Gamefisher” Ξ?Ξ. Sears later sold other outboard motors not badged with their private brands, including “ΞBadgeΞ” from Ξ19??Ξ to Ξ19??Ξ, Eska from Ξ1968±?Ξ to Ξ1986±?Ξ and “ΞBadgeΞ” (Ξ19??Ξ to 19??Ξ).

Two brothers, George and William Kissel founded the Kissel Motor Car company in 1908. The plant was located in Hartford, Wisconsin. Like so many other companies of the period, they fell on hard times in the late 20’s. In 1929 they filed for bankruptcy and lost the company in 1931. In 1934 the brothers regained control of the plant and founded Kissel Industries. They started manufacturing candy vending machines among other ventures. In late 1936, Kissel Industries won an exclusive contract with Sears, Roebucks & Company to build outboard motors, quickly receiving instructions from Sears to develop a complete new line of outboard motors. George Kissel and Herman Palmer would design the new outboard. They had been the chief engine designers at the old motor car company. The new outboards would be called Waterwitch (one word). Kissel Industries never marketed outboards under any other name, not even their own. For more information about these engines, go to a really beautiful website dedicated to the Waterwitch Outboards built by the Kissel Motor Company in Hartford, Wisconsin from 1936~1944. The only outboard production during the War Years was for government agencies.

In 1944 Kissel Industries was purchased by West Bend Aluminum Company along with the Sears contract to make outboards. The relationship continued with Sears through this transition. Sears brought an end to the Waterwitch brand of outboard motors in 1945.

In 1946, West Bend manufactured their first motor for Sears. It was in this year that Sears changed their outboard motor brand name to “Elgin”. West Bend had a non-compete clause with Sears for the USA that ran through 1955. In 1956, some of the West Bend outboards started wearing the West Bend badge which were sold in direct competition with Sears through a new West Bend dealer network.

In 1965, Chrysler Corporation purchased West Bend’s outboard motor business.

In 1972?, Sears switched to Scott-McCulloch for outboard motors, but continued to source service parts for their previous Elgin models from Chrysler.

In 1983, Bayliner purchased Chrysler’s Outboard Division for their US Marine Division and changed the brand badge “Chrysler” to “Force”.

In 1986, The Brunswick Corporation purchased Bayliner’s US Marine Division which included Force Outboards and absorbed it into their Mercury Marine Division. Mercury continues to supply some parts for Force, Chrysler and even West Bend and similar Sears models through their Mercury, Mariner and Quicksilver dealer networks.

In 1974, Tanaka of Japan introduced a 2.5 hp air-cooled gasoline 2-stroke cycle outboard motor that would eventually be private label (Badged) for Sears. Tanaka ceased production of outboard motors in 2002 due to changes in emission standards.

  History of Sears Outboard Motors
From LeeroysRamblings.com

Sears-Roebuck got into the retail outboard business through their catalog and stores about 1913 or 1914.  It’s Motorgo kickers were produced by a number of firms, namely Lockwood Ash motors and Caille outboards to be badged as their Motorgo.  Around 1934 Sears outboard brand became the Waterwitch, Which were supplied by Muncie Gear Works (Neptune), and a few leftover Johnsons.

Somewhere near 1936 the agreement with Muncie expired.  Kissel Automobile Co. was forced into making outboards after their luxury automobile business dried up in the Depression. Sears struck up a agreement with Kissel to build outboard motors. These outboards were, for the most part, simple no-frills affairs offered for about 30% less than similar offerings from a major brand.  Reasonably well-built, the Waterwitch motors proved to Sears that selling outboard motors could be a profitable business.  Sporting unusual styling said to be from the pen of renowned designer Raymond Lowey, the Waterwitch motors were very successful – we know this because a lot of Kissel-made Waterwitch outboards still show up today.   One of the most exotic Waterwitches were the “twin pod” (Mae West) fuel tank motors.

A Waterwitch single (with reliability issues) was featured prominently in Robert McCloskey’s 1952 Caldecott Honor book for children; ONE MORNING IN MAINE!

After WWII ended, Kissel was purchased by the West Bend Aluminum Company and Sears asked West Bend to come up with a new Elgin outboard by 1946.  There were some (a few thousand) Waterwitches assembled from parts by West Bend before the new Sears Elgin brand got into production.  Here, Sears and West Bend worked together to develop their outboard product line, one that fit the Sears consumer’s budget, lifestyle and Sears’ guidelines for quality.  Certainly no mass-retailer ever had a closer relationship with an outboard supplier than Sears and West Bend.  This relationship was highly successful and profitable for 12 years.  Their agreement remained exclusive through 1959, so much so that West Bend did not market motors in the USA under their own name until 1955.  But it was the apple green small (1 1/2 to 7 1/2 hp) Elgin motors from 1946 to 1955 that are best known today.

In 1959 Sears started a relationship with Scott-Atwater, by then known as Scott McCulloch – this would last through the late 1960s.  In 1964 the Elgin name was dropped in the USA and replaced with that of spokesperson Ted Williams or with the Sears or Gamefisher names.

In the mid 1960s West Bend supplied motors to Sears’ competition Montgomery Wards.  In 1965 West Bend ended up selling out to Chrysler who became a major player in the world of outboards.  In the 1980s, after Chrysler sold their outboard business to US Marine/Force, Sears once again offered private brand Gamefisher motors – many of which had been Elgins 20 years before, things had come full circle!

Some of the late small Gamefishers were made by Tanaka of Japan, which can be identified by the model number prefix of 298!

However, to this day, most outboard people always think of the West Bend-made Elgin motors when the topic of Sears and outboards comes up.

WHAT YEAR IS YOUR ESKA OUTBOARD MOTOR? SEE BELOW!

ESKA
ESKA sold its first outboard in 1960. Eska took a single cylinder air cooled engine made by Tecumseh and attached it to a Clinton lower unit. It was about as simple as could be. They continued unchanged until 1973 when Eska introduced a water cooled two cylinder 9.9 and 15 HP motor. They went out of business in 1987. Eska supplied motors to many retailers such as Sears, Pennys, Grants and others.

Layout of the EverythingAboutBoats.org Website's Pages

— Types of Webpages —
This website consists almost entirely of 3 types of webpages as follows:

  1. TOPIC PAGES (See Main Topic Pages listed on Website Contents or the Right Sidebar)
  2. VENDOR PAGES (Vendors of Products, Services, Events,+, DestinationsMedia Creators)
  3. PRODUCT PAGES (Equipment, Events, Media: pDoc, Books, Magazines, Videos, Websites,+)

Clickable Links that lead to other webpages appear in Blue Text and usually open in a new window.
Links in the Right Sidebar and most directories open in the current window, not a new window.

Note in the examples above that these pages form a natural hierarchy.
The unnumbered "^" pages are listed alphabetically in most tables.

Media Titles in tables are distinguished by their smaller font size.
Media (Books, Magazines, Videos, Articles,+) are treated as Products.
Vendors' Product Documentation (pDoc) are considered Media.
Destinations & Media Creators are treated as Vendors.
All Website Pages are optimized for viewing on
full-width disktop computer monitors,

General Comments About the Website

FROM Donald: "This is an awesome website. I found the information that I needed right away from one of the over 20,000 free articles that you provide as a public service. I'm surprised that so much if this site is free. But I still signed up so I could access the thousands of expanded pages, interesting articles, and dozens of valuable programs! The member's library of books, magazines and videos that I can view online is really terrific! I understand that you and your staff are all unpaid volunteers. Please keep up the good work. And I commend you for your plans to add another 10,000 free informative articles over the next year. I'm thrilled to support you in this endeavor with my small membership donation. Thanks again for all your hard work."

FROM Huey: "I agree with my Uncle, I too have found the articles to be very enlightening. They say that it will take about 100,000 articles to cover the full scope that they have envisioned for the website. They have over 20,000 articles so far and that's doing pretty well, but it could take several years to get the rest. I also noticed that many of the Main Topic Pages and some of the article pages are still in the rough draft stage. I guess that they will fill in as they can get volunteers to work on them. But what I can't figure out is why anyone would spend the time writing informative in depth articles just to give away free to this website for publication? What's in it for them?"

FROM Dewey: "Well Huey, to me It looks like most of the articles on this website are written by very informed people, like boating instructors, boat designers, boat builders, riggers, electricians, fitters, marine repair technicians and marine surveyors. Writing such articles helps establish them as knowledgeable professionals. After all, this website was originally created by a school for marine technicians and marine surveyors. The website is growing in content every day. They even had to move to a bigger, more powerful server because the website's traffic has been growing exponentially."

FROM Louie: "I agree with everyone above. This site is quickly becoming the ultimate reference resource about every aspect of boats and ships for everyone from the beginning recreational boater to the seasoned professional mariner. I use the topic pages on the right sidebar to browse around the website. It's like a Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook for Boaters. Their Members' Library of over 300 popular and obscure books and over 200 magazine back issues that can be viewed online is fabulous. The Academy's magazine is especially informative. On top of that, there is the "Ask-An-Expert program for members where you can get an expert's answer to any of your boat questions. And a whole years membership is only $25. What a deal! I really love being part of this "Everything About Boats" community and help provide thousands of helpful articles free to the public. I think that I'll sit down right now and write an article about my experiences boating with my uncle."

FROM Scrooge: "You rave about this website like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well, I think it stinks. Sure, it has a lot of good information for boaters, and they're adding more every day, but it will probably never be finished. Furthermore, I don't even own a boat. And I wouldn't have a boat even if someone gave me one. Boats are a waste of money and time and energy and money! They're just a hole in the water you pour money into. If you gave me a boat, I'd sell it quicker then you could say Baggywrinkle. Then I'd lock up the cash with all my other money so I could keep my eye on it and count it every day. Bah humbug."

FROM Daisy: "I'm just so glad that Donald got the boat so we and the boys could enjoy boating — together. And of course all of the girls, April, May, and June, love to be on the water too, especially when that is where the boys are. Oh poor Scrooge, boating is more fun then you could possibly imagine."

FROM Scrooge: "After seeing how much fun you all have on the water together, I regret that I didn't have that much fun when I was young. I've had a change of heart, and I'm giving each of you a Lifetime Academy Membership."

FROM Editor: "For those of you that have stayed with us this far, many thanks, and we hope that you found this little narrative informative.
